Friday Focus: Marine Corps Historic Half Marathon
Fredericksburg will open the streets to runners of the 10th annual, Marine Corps Marathon Historic Half. In years past 7,500 runners have participated in this massive and historic event. The race is famous for its patriotism, historic setting, and the infamous Hospital Hill, which presents a unique challenge for runners with its incredibly steep incline.
The weekend is not only for runners but also for spectators and supporters along the way. There will be a Healthy Lifestyle Expo taking place on May 18th-19th in the Fredericksburg Conference and Expo Center. Every mile marker of the course provides entertainment and motivation for runners and spectators. There will be everything from pipe bands, therapy dogs, cow bell ringers, and cheerleading squads all along the course to keep the runners going. Multiple water and aid stations are fixed along the course as well as aid to the participants.
Three different races that will take place this Sunday. The first is the Devil Dog Double. This race includes the Historic Half but with an additional 5 miles added on. The winners must conquer Hospital Hill not once but TWICE! The second is the Semper 5ive which is a shorter five-mile race that still includes Hospital Hill. And finally, the Marine Corps Historic Half which is 13.1 miles through Fredericksburg. The start and finish lines are adjacent to the Fredericksburg Conference and Expo Center, with finishing celebrations held in the parking lot.
